Hi everyone and welcome to my June newsletter.
I hope that you are well and have not got washed away with all the rain we have been having. I have to say that the rain Gods have not been very nice to all of us with sunny weekdays and then horrible rainy weekends, with soggy grounds or high winds. Not playing nice. Sadly, the forecast for this weekend is not much better, with heavy rain forecast for Saturday and only slightly less for Sunday. Luckily, both these markets have aa asphalt back-up, so fingers crossed that the rain holds off until after 2pm. Not too much to ask surely. 😊
If the weather does continue to play up, and markets are cancelled, remember you can always go online to www.achealthysolutions.com.au or give me a ring on 0406 036 845 and I can organise delivery for you. The prices are the same as at the market and all orders over $100, postage is free.
With the days drawing in and getting somewhat colder in the mornings, I thought that it would be a good time to look at how turmeric can help with the common cold and also, if it turns to bronchitis. Given that both are based on inflammatory conditions, it would seem from the research I was able o find that indeed your turmeric can help with our colds and flu.
Talking of colds and flu, a great way to take you turmeric is as a hot turmeric chi. I have a fully organic chi, CurQone, made by my friend James up in Queensland. I love it with Coconut milk and a bit of real honey. So, I thought that I would offer you all a chance to try it at a reduced price. So, for this month I’m offering it at a reduced price of $30/packet – normally $50 – for a 2-month supply or you can get 2 packets for $50. (Just to make you aware, the product I have is exactly the same as this, but it is in a packet instead of a circular tub – due to supply issues he couldn’t source sufficient tubs). This is a great chance to try something a bit different, have it as an evening drink and it will also help you off to sleep. 😊 What more could you want?
Curcumin for Colds and sore throats
IWith winter fast approaching and family and friends already suffering from the symptoms of colds etc I thought that this month I would look at how turmeric could help you get through the winter as well as possible.
Turmeric is well known for its antiseptic and antispasmodic properties. Known as a powerful antioxidant, curcumin, present in turmeric helps to fight infections and reduce inflammation, preventing the onset of respiratory ailments. A mixture of turmeric and milk (especially with some good honey) works wonders on the throat and helps eliminate any pathogens in the body, thanks to its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Gargling with turmeric, salt and warm water also helps to ease a sore throat.
In a Japanese study to investigate the effects of 12-week consumption of highly bioavailable curcumin on common cold symptoms, immune function, and inflammatory markers. They found that the cumulative number of days for which common cold symptoms persisted was significantly lower in the group taking the high dose curcumin than that in the placebo group. No adverse effects were observed.
In India, practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine have used turmeric to treat inflammatory diseases for hundreds of years. Curcumin helps reduce inflammation in the body by controlling certain communication pathways that trigger inflammation. They, may also block the creation of substances that promote inflammation, known as inflammatory mediators.
Bronchitis is inflammation of the airways that occurs in response to a viral or, or less commonly a bacterial infection. The body’s immune response causes swelling and inflammation in the airways, leading to obstructed and difficult breathing. By reducing inflammation, turmeric might soothe the effects of bronchitis.
One of the main compounds in turmeric might help people with bronchitis breathe more easily. A small study looked at the effects of curcumin on people with bronchial asthma, a different condition involving airway inflammation. The researchers tested the breathing efficiency of 77 people and found that those taking the curcumin showed FEV1 (the amount of air you can breathe in in 1 minute) results that were significantly higher than those just receiving standard bronchial asthma treatment. So, it helps you breathe more easily. That’s got to be good.
